What will come of a political showdown?

What will come of a political showdown?

The Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PMLN) has given the Pakistan People’s Party 48 hours to stop what it describes as a a ’smear campaign’ against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

With this ultimatum, the tensions between the government and opposition party have come to a head. In recent weeks, the PPP and PMLN have disagreed on the issue of whether Pervez Musharraf should be tried for his actions on November 3, 2007. ‘Revelations’ by intelligence officials about a two-decade-old episode in which the ISI reportedly funded an opposition campaign against Benazir Bhutto have also fueled the fire.

Are Pakistan’s two major political parties – the PPP and PMLN – on a collision course? Can the government take steps to avert a showdown with the opposition that would plunge this nation into further political instability? Or is an all-out confrontation between these two major parties one of the best ways to purge Pakistan’s political past of its demons so that democracy can enjoy a new start in this country?

As I write these lines the latest on this is that PML N has withdrawn its 48 hour ultimatum. We are back at square one. Confrontation postponed. All are sailing in the same boat including MQM and PML Q. So why crib…we voted them to power, and history books were AVAILABLE.

I feel the government officials should be thrown out from politics. They have become a pain with their nefarious deeds and flimsy comments.

Its time dashing cricket star Imran Khan is given a chance and allowed to lead the nation. He is smart, intelligent and brave. Only problem is that he puts his foot into his mouth sometimes. He should avoid that and maintain his composure.

How can the ISI pay off right wing parties. It’s time ISI’s wings are clipped and it made to function responsibly as per law. It has grown too big for its boots . No wonder Pakistan has acquired a bad name and its reputation has nosedived across the globe.

    Missing Political Concept:
The Political System in Pakistan and as well as in Afghanistan, Iraq is designed by the West.
The any possible Democracy Solution for this Region needs a Long term Development and Planning. For the Western it is difficult to handle a Democracy as Compare to a Shine Democracy where the some figures are responsible and acting like a profit Center Managers.

Yes, lets start a trial/court martial on Musharraf. Then after we’re done with that, lets try all the members of the ruling parties. After we’re done with them, lets try all the politicians in the opposition. Then, lets try the members of our “independent judiciary”.

This will go on and on and on. What this country needs is a revolution. The people should rise up against the system. Because, it is the system that is flawed. The system permits even a normal level-headed guy (we have a serious shortage of those, by the way) to be corrupted by power and greed.

The Pakistani who begs at traffic signals and barely gets a meal a day doesn’t give a damn about independent judiciaries or political manifestos. What they want is a roof over their heads and three square meals a day. Their only mistake was, it seems, that they were born in this country.
The Quaid must be turning in his grave right now.

I am unable to understand. Whatever be the difficulties that Pakistan faces, its politicians are touching new lows in approaching a country like Saudi Arabia to play mediator. The country is an archaic, corrupt monarchy. How can they (or anybody else) be giving advise on democratic issues? Demcoracies solve their problems themselves and don’t seek advice from outsiders, least of all countries like Saudi.

And is it true that Pakistan is selling farmland to Saudi? Even the dictatorships of Africa ( barring Sudan) are not willing to sell their farmlands. Pakistan will destroy its topsoil, deplete its groundwaters and eat into a legacy that it should hold in trust for its future generations. Sad.

Country needs a change at the grass roots. All political parties should give up hereditary leaderships and should organise on a proper democratic footing. Can you guess who is going to be the next president of Pakistan? Pakistani’s are fools relying on dynasties rather than merits.

Interestingly the Court Martial is to be initiated on behest of President of Pakistan, ironically elected by People of Pakistan.

This tiresome game has started all over again, as I knew it would. I have been through it before, not once, not twice, but fully three times before! Not even the faces have changed. Musharraf was doing well on many fronts (except the Militancy one), if only he had strengthened the Judiciary, instead he did the exact opposite. The people of Pakistan, the Media, have been naive bordering on foolishness to expect anything else. There is a dictum in horse racing circles, never bet a second time on a horse that has lost you money once. We have been foolish enough to bet 3 times. Nawaz is waiting in the wings to take over when Zardari and company leave, and the Tamasha will start again. In a region that is on the verge of economic take off due to economic miracles of India on one side, and China on the other, the spoiler seems to be Pakistan/Afghanistan, or Afpak. The world powers know what turmoil will be caused in this region if Pakistan’s house of cards were to collapse. Imagine the economic turmoil that will ensue in this region, doing unimaginable damage to the fragile economic recovery that is taking place in the “World that matters”. This is the context in which to contemplate Afpak. My advice to any one that can pull some weight is: improve Governance in Pakistan, because Governance is abysmal and decrepit; and strengthen the judiciary, to uphold the Rule of Law. Without this, Pakistan is DOOMED, and will take the whole region with it. The Pakistani coffers are empty, and it is because of the American help (yes, America that is the butt of all the hatred of Pakistanis)that the IMF is doling out some money, at very high interest rates, to keep the economy afloat. Also Everybody must watch on Youtube the Pakistani lady Parliamentarian that stole another ladies credit card in a Gym, and immediately went on a shopping spree, but was caught red handed.

Can the government take steps to avert a showdown with the opposition that would plunge this nation into further political instability?
Comments: Expediency demands such moves. But whatever,a controlled and not all out campaign is PPP compulsion. This is a survival game.

Comments: No sir, this makes little sense, low illiteracy rate gives it a ”elite gossip status’ and no real change can be anticipated. So far, since its inception Pakistan’s political solutions are deals or directions,,,,understandably THROUGH THE GOOD OFFICES OF US and its Saudi friends. The pattern wouldn’t change. Rather it is good that someone is there to steer it at AWAY FROM CHAOS. Politicians are inapt to run this difficult diversified country. Our politicians are so much wound up in the struggle of their meagre existence that, they completely forget the main reason of democracy.

Their desire to enter in politics is to enhance their personal wealth, powers and ego. They entirely forget main objective of democracy which is to serve the people and the country. From day one they been fighting like dogs and cats, not to serve the nation but to themselves and this is the unfortunate reality.

I hope one day we will have a benevolent leader who can steer this nation out of its misery.

The call for a trial for Pervaiz Musharaf, this is a political game and has nothing to do with justice. The actual reason they are pursuing this shenanigan is to restore themselves into the political platform, by proving Mr. Parvaiz Musharaf wrong, they are hoping to redeem their names and wash their sins. Dragging PPP into this shared they are hoping to kill two birds with one arrow.

They are focusing upon restoring themselves, forgetting the fact that, nation is still at war with the terrorist. Beside terrorists plague we have other several major problems such as poverty, IDPs issues, security of our people and nation, energy crises, inflation, unemployment, lack of justice for individuals, civil laws etc. All these issues require full attention of all branches of our government. But these two individuals are focused just on their miserable existence.

My advice to nation; forget about these two individuals, let the present government focus on real issues which effects masses lives. Demand from your government for opportunities for nation not few self serving individuals.

May God show us the light. Ameen

Brig (R) Imtiaz Billa and Gen (R) Asad Durrani after Pakistan Army has been side lined by General Pervez Kiyani from taking part in Pakistan politics are trying establish credibility among the politicians, so that politicians should appraise them what a wonderful job they have done.

I would like to tell to these retired Army Officers that politicians and people of Pakistan do watch and read the news from print and electronic media but they are not distracted at all from the ‘breaking news’ released by them.

Before I comment on PPP-PML(N) relationship, I would like to first take the case of MQM in respect to Jinnahpur.

MQM was never involved in making a state within the state, otherwise by this time, the geographical boundaries of Pakistan would have been different today.

Few people do not want to see MQM which is the third largest political party of Pakistan to see MQM in power.

Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah has made the country for the people of Pakistan and not for few Army General who time and again enter from the back door in the Presidency. These Army General were power hunger and have derailed democracy in the country.

I would like to ask one question to the readers of these columns that why the Indian Army General has not taken over the control of Indian government.

The answer is simple. Indian politicians have never allowed Indian Army Generals to interfere in Indian government’s political role and hence Indian Army Generals are kept out of politics.

It is the fault of Pakistani politicians that instead of settling their differences through democratic process, they invite Pakistan Army Generals to take over the control of the government to oust the sitting government. So once a Pakistani Army General takes over, he do not want to leave the Presidency.

This the first time in the history of Pakistan that two main stream political parties viz. PPP and PML(N) have joined hands to oust Pervez Musharraf from the Presidency and he has seen that there is no more room for Pakistan Army Generals to run democratic system of Pakistan.

I salute the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani from distancing Pakistan Army from the politics, as he is a real professional and know what the limitations of Pakistan Army are. I am sure that under his guidance, Pakistan Army will play its important role to secure the borders of Pakistan from any foreign invasion.

Coming back on the role of PPP and PML(N) in Pakistan’s politics, I do not think that Mr. Asif Ali Zardari and Mian Nawaz Shariff will ever part from each other.

It is a matter of time and any misunderstanding will be removed on the same day when these two leaders will meet next.

Time will speak itself and Brig (R) Imtiaz Billa or Gen (R) Asad Durrani or Maj. Amir will sooner or later will become past of the relic like Gen (R) Ayub Khan, Gen (R) Yahya Khan, Gen (R) Zial ul Haq and Gen (R) Pervez Musharraf.
There is no more room for the Pakistan’s Army Generals in Pakistan’s politics.

I wish all of them best of luck in their professional duties.

Though it is more important to prioritize urgent issues over the past issues, however, it is important ot bring to justice all leaders of at least the near past, about whom people have grievence, starting from Zardari, Nawaz Shareef, Musharaf and the judge. We all agree there are serious unasnwerd questions about all these leaders, not simply Musharraf. Muharraf is the target because under the current cirumstances, he is the weakest link. Also, it is important to recognize, everyone one of them is innocent, until proven guilty. I think if Nawaz Shareef has success in bringing Musharraf to court, it will open up a pandora box. There will open up cases against Zardari, Nawaz Shareef and the judge himself. Also, who ever is able to produce evidence will win. Musharraf does have at least evidence from air traffic control related to the hijacking incident. He will use it only when push shove comes to push. The irony is the judge endorsed him, all along, until the last year of Musharraf’s presidency. I think it the better alternative is to move on with the era of democracy and not open the old graves. Because almost none in our leaders has been angels. Amost all have misused their offices in the past, and there has not been any accoutnablity for them. Why single out only the weakest link? Why not all of them, or none of them.

Not only Musharaf should be tried (for Murder of the Republic), but all senior officers of the Army should be tried, and face the ultimate penalty for capital crime.
This is the only way, a genuine resurrection of the Islamic Republic can take place.

I would like to reiterate the opinion expressed by Keti Zilgish. The Provinces should be given autonomy and control over their resources. Right now Punjab is dominating in all spheres and non-Punjabis feel like second class citizens, deprived of their rights & shares and weak, like Bengalis once. It is about time exploitation by one province is stopped and another East Pakistan like calamity avoided.

The best way to handle Musharraf’s trial issue is to have the Army Court Marshalll him for violating his oath as an officer.

My recommendation would be to strip him off his rank, demote him to the lowest soldier’s rank and give him a dishonourable discharge.

Further, he looses all his benefits, pension and gives up all that he as acquired due to his assention through the ranks including his uniform (aka his second skin)

The above is standard procedure that is followed in many countries including Pakistan for officers who show incompetance or deleriction of duty.

He will become a persona non-grata not only in Pakistan but also in the rest of the world. Who would want to patronize a disgraced geeneral who has been dishomourable discharged from his post?

This punishment will be the most befitting punishment. The trial should be a military trial in open forum. Politicians should stay out of it.

The political leadership of Pakistan is very corrupt including Zardari and Nawaz. Neither of them can be trusted to ensure a fair treatment of Musharraf. There will be heavy political taint (NRO and Nawaz’s personal agenda against the General)

A court marshall of Musharraf by his own peers and service memebers will be the most chilling on the mini Bonapartes of the future.

Yes this Brigadiar billa seems to be the worst guy I ever have seen and is exposing what our agencies had been into. Its unfortunate and detestable to have these type of people in the agencies.
I personally respect judiciary and and also believe in its independence. Its judicial activism is matchless, even if it rains in any part of country, it takes sou moto action against nature. But how about such a serious issue is debated in every channel about ISI distributing money to strengthen RIGHT WING in Pakistan and judiciary (which already has this case ‘Asghar Khan’) is not responding. Is this silence criminal? Is judiciary independent but not impartial? Is a Punjabi judge protecting a punjabi leader?

Just for facts, I am neither a PPP or PML-N supporter. We know all about Zardari’s ‘merits’ but this handling of media campaign (whether the allegations are true or false, I do not know!) by PML-N has certainly raised a lot of alarms about nawaz sharif in my mind. To all those supporters of Sharif, how can you trust this man as your premier when he has washed his hands out of two of the most important events in his reign…kargil.. blaming it on Musharraf and stating that he was not aware of it .. and this Jinnahpur controversy and operation against MQM … again stating that army initiated it and he was not aware of it. SHOULD the PRIME MINISTER not be taking and be responsible for all the actions of his government and what is the use of being a PM if you can be by passed by others?

The PMLN has solidly aligned itself with the rule of law in Pakistan. The PPP has allowed Zardari to make one attempt after another to undo the rule of law in Pakistan (opposition to restoration of the Supreme Court; disenfranchisement of the entire province of Panjab by “firing” the elected government; opposition to restoration of the Parliament by retaining the dictatorial “over-ride” of parliamentary powers introduced by a military dictator). The MQM, while harping about victimization, harbors within its ranks and leadership individuals responsible for the murder of of peaceful demonstrators on May 12 2007 in a bid to keep the Pakistani people enslaved to a dictator. The freedom struggle of Pakistan will not be over until the scoundrels who hold the people of Pakistan in contempt, considering them unfit to rule themselves, are convinced that they cannot get away with murder any more. And for that to happen, Musharraf must be brought to court and charged with Article 6, with providing terrorists with safe haven in Pakistan for 10 years as part of his double game with terrorism to keep himself in power, with the deaths of hundreds of brave Pakistani soldiers at Kargill, and also with respect to Kargill the launching of that operation as a means to sabotage peace meeting betwen two elected prime ministers. For democracy to survive, the truth must be brought to the open and those who seek to keep the Pakistani people enslaved exposed for what they are – and punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Some (like Mr. Khobar) are calling for the trial of the MQM leadership here because they may have a hand in the May 12 deaths. Fine by me! But then, for the sake of justice, are you willing to look into the deaths of the many innocents in the streets of Karachi back in 1992? Or how about some of the innocents who have died during the current counter-insurgency campaign or for that matter in Baluchistan in the 1973-76 campaign and the recent one during Musharraf’s government? Point being almost all of the current champions of democracy have the blood of innocents on their hands.

In this unfortunate country of ours, nobody has a clue as to what justice is. Everyone has a select and limited memory to recount only the wrongs against themselves or their political parties. The way forward is for us to go for justice across the board or you shove the selective justice as there is no place for it in today’s Pakistan. Close this chapter altogether and move on to the future.

Pakistani people have a rotten luck because they cannot get rid of national “leeches” (not leaders mind you). They all carry so much dirty baggage from the past that there is no way that they could become leaders who would be able to galvanize and unite the Pakistani nation. PML-N and PPP are no different in terms of their reach to the Pakistani masses than smaller ethnic parties like ANP and MQM. The politics of PML-N and PPP alike are more about ethnicity and clannishness than caring about the Pakistan of QA.

I say let this showdown happen so people can see through the dirt, malice and chorr-bazaari of all these politicians.
On a lighter note, an English singer/songwriter once commented about the politicians as such:

“All politicians are like a bunch of bananas. They all stick together and all of them are crooked”.

There is much ugliness in the former colonial countries. The very soul and fabric of its present realities is ugliness personified. People think ugly, talk ugly, imagine ugly and act ugly. Beauty in all its form, from physical to spiritual has fled away. People have ceased to have beautiful ideals.

The harmony of freedom, the liberating force of vital and wise knowledge seems illusory. We ridicule the idea that freedom, knowledge and justice are indivisible. Practitioners rule, act falsely and superficially, without any vision and understanding of human destiny. Immediate needs and immediate action are the rule. The exploration and discovery of the laws of life and acting as such are stunned, despised and held in bondage.

Though, one is convinced that everything in life and the rest of the universe works according to certain definite laws, however, the practitioners in their ignorance and crookedness have been interpreting those laws for gaining immediate pleasure and immediate fake security. And in the process man has been subjected to tyranny and suffering.

Nature has been devastated and the creativity and beauty of life has been destroyed. It may be that the practitioners may succeed in destroying humankind and life on this planet. Or it may be that the laws of enlightenment and beauty prevail. As such one should hope, but never lose sight of the ugliness around, and its practitioners.

That is indeed the reality let us face it if we want to …… .

The present predicament faced by the major political parties has come to pass because of the reason that our politics is in a real formative phase. The events of last two and a half years have led Pakistan to re-define our politics. Lately, the PML-N seems to have learned its lessons. The others have still not come to terms with the new reality. The recent campaign of reviving few of the dark events in our political history is an effort to stop the march towards a relatively cleaner politics. The PML-N itself should demand of the judiciary to hear Mr. Asghar khan’s petition regarding the distribution of funds among the politicians by ISI in 1990. I think it will have least impact on the PML-N even if some of the PML-N politicians are convicted. Likewise, the PML-N should welcome an inquiry into the 1992 military operations and let the nation know about the realities.

Well I don’t know how many divisions there were in Pakistan before the present local govt system was brought in. All I know is that, as of now, most non-Punjabis in Pakistan feel as if this country is nothing but a Punjabi colony. The only way i can think of by which we can get across this problem is by making all those ‘divisions’ into ’states’. Present problem areas of Fata and NA could be made ’states’ too. That way we’ll get a new ‘national assembly’ and a clean slate to begin with but we would still have to learn some lessons from Switzerland at least in order to live in peace with all our neighbors and the rest of this world. Moreover by doing something thoroughly ‘unthinkable’ we might even end up being in the enviable position of teaching some others some half way decent lessons.

The role of establishment has been known for years but the extent was a secret. However, the recent revelation has exposed the establishment and the politicians.

It appears from the blame game that PPP is behind it and MQM is playing the dirty role
upfront. PPP does not want to repeal the 17th amendment and lack the courage and determination to charge Gen.Musharraf for treason. PPP leadership returned to Pakistan with a deal brokered by masters and friends of Pakistani rulers. The government is afraid of being exposed.

We need another long march to demand a judicial investigation into the role of ISI. All the military and political leaders should be prosecuted for breaking the laws of the land. Any leader found guilty should be punished to the fullest extent of law.

Well, I do think if PPP go for Mushraf trial, then US and Army will not stay present PPP’s Govt. to go ahead. They have deal not to trial against Mushraf. But PML (N) is doing for sake of People’s of Pakistan and democratic process. Practically speaking, CM Punjab is doing best for sake of People of the Punjab. However, other CMs of provinces are just sitting in their drawing room to get new idea of corruption instead of doing any constructive gain for their provinces. I think Nawaz Sharif should take concrete stand against PPP’s worst action on Mushraf Trial issue. I personaly think, If PML (N) again plan LONG MARCH, obviously political stability will suffer from it, but see this issue in longer perspective rather than shortterm, to make this country more properous.

PML(N) leadership has a very big mouth and PPP needs to shutup their mouth as they are in full majority and do not need any colation from them. PML (N) claims the champion of democracy where the fact is that they are the biggest enemy of democracy and one example is that they wanted to kill the vote bank of MQM and wants to invite the army to rule when they are not in power and for this, the example is that they hijack the lawers movement and forcing the army to takeover. But due to intelegent leadership of PPP they avoided this situation and we expect that PPP will not give any more mercy to PML ( N) as they have the full majority in parliament and will not be black mailed any more.

It is shame to see both major parties are heading to same old confrontation of eighties and ninetees. The people were relieved when leaders of both parties signed CoD and an era of friendship between the leaders and their followers ensued. Ms BB and Mr Nawaz Sharif invested lot of efforts to bring both rivals on the board but unfortunately this amicable relationship is leading to the same old enmity which hounded politics of Pakistan.

Present PPP leadership has gone too far to please a liguist ethnic party which has no qualms to unleash its thugs on its opponents. Last night I was watching Dr Shahid Masood’s Mere Mutabiq in which Miss BB was shown talking to a foreign correspondent and her statement should be an eye opener to her spouse. She clearly said that MQM was a terrorist outfit and has instilled fear into the people and media.

A retired but rogue and discreditted Brig Billa has suddenly appeared and has started talking nothing but lies by trying to give a clean slate to the MQM.

MQM, by hook or crook, has always remained in power. They have no qualms to side with the dictators.

Brig Billa or someone else’s statments in favour of MQM will not be able to vindicate Altaf Hussain

I sincerely hope that judiciary will play its constitutional role to order an investigation and tell the whole nation where MQM stands. The judiciary has already taken an action to investigate 12th May carnage.

Mr Zardari is making a grave mistake of his life to rely upon MQM to confront PML-N. The day is not far when Altaf will stab in PPP’s back and it would be too late by then I am afrad.
