A worthy winner?

A worthy winner?

US president Barack Hussein Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize 2009, just nine months into his first term in office.

As US troops shift gear from action in war-ravaged Iraq to an expected surge in war-torn Afghanistan, questions are being raised whether the Norwegian Nobel Committee has rushed in its praise for Obama’s foreign policy that is yet to be termed a success.

While the committee pays tribute to the first black US president for ‘his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,’ the world is yet to see any major conflicts such as the Middle-East crisis coming even close to a resolution.

Some may agree with the committee when it says that ‘very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,’ but the question being asked is whether the president will live up to the expectations? Do you think Obama now as a Nobel Peace Prize winner will fare any better for the people of Pakistan and the rest of the world?

I strongly believe that THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE awarded to Mr. Obama, is a sign of too much attachment of NOBEL PRIZE COMMITTEE or a volcanic eruption of hope to see a fair world, which Mr.Obama indicated in his speech. I think, American policies don’t change toward the underdeveloped nations and its madness for the control over the world will take the lives of millions of innocent across the globe. Mr. Obama is a new but a different link in the same chain of power seekers for world domination, following in the foot steps of previous presidents. This prize should have been given to someone else who has really done something sincerely for the welfare of humanity and establishment of good relations among the nations.

Seems an interesting gamble. Obviously, the Noble Prize distribution consortium doesn’t consisits of nerds. They would have given it some thousands of thoughts before declaring him the winner. They probably seem to have used the old tactic I feel our school teachers used to do with us. By giving us good marks in prim exam, they are forcing us to think that we can finish with flying colors. The trick is, though psychological, that whenever president Obama thinks/plans of sending its corps for “their long term security purpose”, he is gona give this a second thought. Lets see, whether Obama gets appreciation for his peace projects (if any) in the time to come.

It appears that the Nobel Prize committee has invested in the future by bestowing the honor to the President. Although they are denying it, yet, it is safe to say that Obama’s ‘achievements’ during the course of his less than nine months in office are too few to take notice of in the arena of peace-making. The committee knows that this is a budding young man who holds the strongest office on the planet, one who is ambitious to change the course of world, is deeply interested in forging ahead to establish world peace in the hot pockets in various regions and will not hesitate to take a ‘personal’ initiative to achieve the goal of peace wherever and whenever possible. We should thank the committee for doing us, as humanity, for giving this opportunity to the President, paving the way for him, laying a runway for our better future. True, there is a lot to be done. However, one must not undermine Mr. Obama’s stature and his success as a towering politician and a shining star who has the capability to turn our fortunes around.

I think we all have a right to differ in our opinions but there should be some rationale in our cynical attitudes. How wonderful it would be if we learn to look at things beyond their surface values. As an optimist I see this award to Obama as:
    * an acceptance to a man who openly says he has muslims as his family members(despite the fact that his relations to muslims were constantly used as a tool against him during the pres. campaign),
*an endorsement to his efforts to create a trusting relationship with the muslim world(the Cairo speech!),
*a recognition to his insistance of opening a dialogue with Iran(as opposed to its image as an axis of evil and refusal to talk to Iran by the Bush Admin.),
*as a slap to Bush’s policies of waging wars,… Read More
*as an appreciation to Obama’s decision to close down the Guantanamo, see the world free of nuclear arms, and a will to tackle climate change(when prev. govt refused to budge on its carbon emissions),bring the much neede health reforms to americans etc.
*And last but not the least as a means to give moral strength to this man to carry on with his resolves despite all impediments.

Only time will tell if he is able to live up to his dreams.

I think as a president of US Obama has no glaring achievements to is credit till now nevertheless, he has expressed hopes to shift the gears from violence to peace. His efforts might fare well to the world in general and the trouble areas in particular. The world hopes that he would not turn out to be a real pacifist in the time of doldrums :)

There is hidden but a very positive agenda in giving Mr Obama the Nobel Peace Prize. The
world except for the Neocons and perhaps two
European leaders the rest think differently.
By giving Obama the Peace Prize they have tied him down to his campaign slogan “We Want Change”. Now he has to decide how soon
he should begin withdrawing from Afghanistan
and Iraq, improve relations with Iran and not
bow to Israel in solving the Palestinian issue.

The Nobel Foundation deserves the ‘peace’ award for putting the most powerful man on earth on the spot – a pre-emptive strike if there ever was one. Obama will have this hanging over his head while he decides what to do in Afghanistan, Iraq and the mid east!

Obama is the first President of United States favored by the vast majority of human beings on this planet. It is also a fact that fanatics and extremists in all religions, especially Muslims and Christians do not like him, but they are minority in world population.

Those who want Americans pulled out from Iraq and Afghanistan right away, have absolutely no idea what will happen there if Americans leave right away. You have to have local national government capable to maintain law and order as well to protect the minorities. There is a fear that the moment Americans pack up and leave, there will be blood bath and genocide in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Those who say Obama should not get Nobel Peace Award because America has stock piles of nuclear weapon, a threat to humanity.

Then why Vice President Al-Gore got the award. His country had stock-piles of nuclear weapons all the time. We should realize that having nuclear weapons is also a safeguard against evil nations (like former Germany or Russia) who may want to attack another country. So the purpose of Nuclear weapons is to maintain peace in the world as well.

Obama has opened the dialogue with North Korea and Iran. This is a bold step towards peace.

Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

A worthy prize for one of the most worthy recipients of — one of the most worthy countries of the world – the United States of America.

Imagine a ‘Husain’ getting elected by an overwhelming majority of the voters in the SAME United States that destroyed another Husain and Husain’s country in a foreign land for no rhyme or reason – except for the whims and the paranoia of a mentally challenged lawless cowboy.

A country turned from a berserk imperialist Neocon invader country — into a peace promoting consensus seeking Jeffersonian country overnight by the magical personality of one man — Barack Obama.

The Nobel peace prize to Obama is a TRIBUTE to BOTH: to the MAN who transformed overnight a US hating world into once again US respecting world – and to a COUNTRY for finding it Jeffersonian moorings as an upholder of International Law — and at peace with the entire world — once again.

No. It was not premature to award Obama the NP. He does not desrve it now or in the future.

Although some critics thinks that with the change of President in the White House, there were many setbacks to the peace process going on previously – like Palestinian-Isreal issue resolve which was started by Bush administration, seems like more as bargaining chip in the hand of Obama rather than a solution to the problem, the Kashmir issue which was 99.5% resolved and people were saying just one agreement was left has rolled back to position from where it started, Afghanistan becomes a more dangerous place, Iran is being threatened by Isrealis and Americans many time, an unethical support was given to Iran’s own matters, Pakistan is being pushed into the war which is not on the will of its people. and there is a continuous resolve by the top brass of Obama administration who says that they have the stick in their hand to treat the world the way they wanted to —— but I am very hopeful that the message of Change by President Obama will solve all the problems of the world.

Hope is something we must not loose.

Even the Alexander got the honor after the wars that he fought but Obama seems a better one in this area, as he is rewarded with the prize for the war he has not won yet.

P.S.: Bill Clinton, Yaser Arafat, Simon Peres, Issac Rabin — all were awarded with nobel prize but their peace making initiatives didn’t turn into any peaceful solution yet.

This will be probably the first Nobel Peace prize that was won based upon “should have” and “would’ve”, which almost everbody can do in this world. However, having said that, since President has won it, he should be under debt to legitimize that honor by honoring his words of peace all over the world. He needs to pull all american troops out of iraq and afghanistan immidiately with out any furter delay and casualties. I think it is now long overdue. Millions of americans are out of work, not enough Pell grants for students, higher education has spiralled out of affordability, people without health insurance, and rising national debt and trade deficits, are all factors of prolonged war. I think all these funds that are being spent over long and aimless wars should be spent over homeless people in the united states, higher education can be made affordable, every american citizen can enjoy affordable health care.

Why to award Obama, if he has not been able to close the Guantanamo Bay Dentention Camp?

Why to award Obama, if he is a bully for Iran?

Why to award Noble Peace prize to any American, who are the only reason for spoiling world peace?

By giving him the Nobel Prize the Norwegian team might have asserted that he may come to truice with the nations he is in war with. Actually it is a good idea. A person who may have a character or not, if people start saying him good man, he tries to be so. So far Mr. Obama has failed to bring the change he had promised with his nation and the international community. the dead tolls in Afghanistan and Iraq are still rising. Pakistan is also in equal troubles because of the side-effects of the Afghan war. Initially I was appalled to hear the news. On second thought though, I think Obama’s Nobel is not totally unjustified.
He should thank Bush for the Nobel! From a European perspective, he was awarded Nobel for not being Bush.
The Nobel is not for what he has done, but for what he can. The Nobel is not for the achievements of the past, but it is for the hope for the future. The Nobel is for reconciliation. For a pragmatic compromise – with the conservative Muslim world, with a heartless greedy capitalism, with careless destruction of the environment, with the proliferating nuclear powers. The Nobel is for immortal hope, untiring efforts, and endless power of the trickledown effect of charisma. The Nobel is for America for electing a black President; for the Democrats for differentiating themselves from neo-conservatives, for the Main Street over the Wall Street, for tomorrow over today.
This is the first Nobel – not for past laurels but for the faith to implement a better future.
The ball is in your court Mr. President!

Kill, kill and kill till all who disagree surrender and rule the world like no one has done before, a new colonial era; that rivals none from the past.

I hope Obama can undo some of the damages done by the now in hiding Bush.

He will deserve a few more, only if he can bring the world back to 1999. Keep in mind he has to roll up arrogance, follies, crimes and genocides of over 8 years. In 8 months he has been able to atleast do 5% of the roll-up.

President Mr. Barak Hussein Obama is a breath of fresh air in the stale environment of international politics where status quo, is the norm. He has initiated a movement of dialogue with the Muslim world to achieve peace, when many of his predecessors have failed, except for President Jimmy Carter. President Mr. Jimmy Carter is also a peace maker and a courageous human being, who is not afraid to speak the truth. May God Bless him. It is up to rest of the world leaders to join President Barak Obama and begin the long journey to resolve our differences on the table instead war grounds, They should work to create peace and harmony among nations instead of creating conflicts and proxy wars leading to human misery and destruction.

I believe he deserves Nobel Peace Prize for his intentions and also for initiatives he has taken to bring the peace among the nations and enemies. This is an uphill battle and a very long journey, we need to have realistic expectations. USA is just one country which is going through extreme difficult times herself. As a president of this nation he can exert some pressure upon some nations, but cannot enforce his will. Let us hope that, the rest of the players in the international forum are able to do the same and join him in this journey, may be together they will build a momentum to bring the peace instead of mistrust, vengeance and conflicts.

Pressure is not only upon Mr. Barak Hussein Obama, but all the leaders in the Middle East, Indo-Pakistan and Afghan to sit together and resolve the issues in civil and intelligent manners instead of piling up weapons of mass destruction, threats and conspiracies to keep the conflicts alive forever. They all need courage and conviction to do the right thing for humanity. Peace makers are God’s favourite people, there are better rewards and prizes waiting for them. May God show them the light.

Although the awarding of the Peace Prize may seem a little premature, Obama deserves a lot of credit for initiating dialogue and for sowing the seeds of change in an otherwise hostile world–at least from a Muslim perspective.

His address to the Muslim world and many other steps (on his part) to reach out to the Muslim in the US and across the world are definitely praise-worthy–a definite first for a US President in recent years.

But what remains to be seen is whether or not the slogans of ‘hope’ and ‘change’ from his Presidential run-up to the White House will bear fruit and truly reverberate through the entire world with Palestine and Kashmir issues coming to a reasonable resolution during his tenure.

Perhaps, the reasoning behind the bestowal of such honors on him was simply to goad him on the path of change enough to not be swayed by dark forces of evil and conflict.

All the best to him and may his level of sincerity (for his nation) inspire in Pakistani leaders the same sense of devotion and commitment for their country so they could finally rid the landscape of such vices as corruption, feudalism, embezzlement, tyranny and treason. Amen!

Gandhi was denied the Nobel peace prize because he was a ‘patriot’, apparently he would see the interests of Indians before he would see the interest of peace. Obama is the president of a country which is engaged in two big wars and holds the largest stockpile of nuclear arms ever. He is the first American president in the last 50 years to not meet the Dalai Lama because that may anger the chinese, on whom the US economy is dependent for the time being. Does he (or can he) see the interests of all humankind before the interests of his voting constituency? Giving the Nobel prize to the sitting president of a country is a mockery of the prize. Obama’s time may have been in the future, when he has really achieved something important for all humankind and no longer worries about getting elected, but most definitely it is not now. Disappointed with the Nobel committee.

I am naturalized US citizen. I voted for President Obama, I contributed towards his campaign. I pray for his life and success for his efforts to bring peace in the world. Unfortunately, he is not showing as much forte as many Americans were expecting. May be the reality of strength of Israeli Lobby in US has taught him limits of his power. No question, if Israel can share land for peace with Palestinian, then both Muslims and Jews will be able to live n peace and harmony. US and Europe will be safe and their security risk will be less. Loss of American lives for Israel will stop.
Usually there is difference of 18-20 in US foreign policy towards Muslim countries and Pakistan with change in its president/ party. This time I expect little more change may be 15-20. The max.

What a joke! If one speech could earn you a Nobel peace prize then i think it has lost its credibility. What has Obama done in last few months to earn this reward. It shows that Nobel Peace Prize is for political reasons and irony of all this is that it is the third American president who got it. And i think they were awarded these prizes for bringing misery through wars and dropping nuclear weapon to end the war. What a joke it is. i mean if Obama could get it for doing nothing and only doing some impressive speeches then an Israeli prime minister should also get it for his efforts to end the Palestinians (conflict). Nobel Peace prize is for occupying and killing innocent civilians. Great!! keep it up.

I think Obama was a pretty decent choice for this award. He did the one thing very few leaders have attempted to do – communicate. Or at least demonstrate the willingness to communicate with those whom the US is wary about (re Iran). Unless we demonstrate a clear desire to want to communicate, how on earth do we expect to make peace with our foes? Clear, concise and appropriate actions only come after, what’s the point in DOING anything, when one does not know WHAT to do, because they never bothered communicating? For me, Obama did that, yes, we have to see if this translate to concrete action. But also look at it this way, while this may be a great achievement for Obama, it is also a very subtle and deceptively simple message to him that the pressure is on!!

I believe this to be a very pre-mature decision on part of the Nobel Committee. Its not on the basis of ones intentions or efforts alone that an individual should be judged.

If that were the case, I believe it would be fair to say that Osama bin Laden or Mullah Omar (i know absurd) would have been suitable as well. Afterall, in his will, Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel said the Peace Prize, presented annually in Oslo, should be awarded “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” Or perhaps every new UN secretary general should win it, as he is at the helm of affairs of a global congress.

Osama and Mullah Omar, did call for the reduction and rather eradication of troops from land that they belonged to, only difference was that they were not democratically elected as per the idea of popular democracy. One a leader of his people and the other a citizen of his land and a hero if seen through the scope of the Cold War era.

Obama surely has tried, has reached out to the world, but what are we comparing to, George Dubbya Bush?? Any change from a war mongering leader is a pleasant one. I believe its a conflict of interest when you have the leader of a nation that has clear hegemony in many spheres to be awarded a prize at all as his intentions have always been one of realpolitik and self interest. Were this the leader of say Brunei, who had made similar calls as Obama, it would have been more appropriate.

President Obama has much to show in his remaining years, reaching out is one thing, but while you rally your congress to send 40,000 additional troops to a foreign occupied land under the banner of the War on Terror, I say step aside Mr. President, get your troops out and work on an amicable solution to the areas which now see more death and destruction under American/Nato/Coalition occupation than they saw under the regimes that America thought oppressive, surely Oil and a stronghold in Southern Asia to counter China had nothing to do with it.

But I do wish you well and hope that this peace prize is well deserved once your term in office is complete and once the many troubled areas of the world find peace.

Either the standards for this award are very low or there isn’t any real peace making going one.

Obama is not a worthy winner, the reason I say this because, I haven’t seen him do anything concrete to resolve global issues, yes he can talk, but words only can’t solve the issues. If you review the profile of his advisors, you will only find out that they have great ambitious plans that only serve the US interests.

Obama has so far not delivered what he promised, only time will tell as to whether he really deserved all this…

1)US has illegally occupied territory in Iraq

Obama did make some initiatives such as trying to shut down Guantanamo bay, stop torture, move out of Iraq, talking to those considered terrorists and looking for a Nuclear free world. Of course he has not succeded in many of his initiatives. For that matter even Nobel peace prize winner Dalai Lama has not succeeded in his initiatives. However one feels that a Nobel is too early for Obama as one needs to see the changes in his policies as he faces resistance. Too many politicians start out as good people, but when they face resistance, they change their core values or make somersaults just to survive in the political field. So Obama needs to be tested further as to whether he has the integrity and follow-through and not just ideas. Some of the scientists who have won the Nobel were given the award after decades of research. Maybe Obama’s should have been give after his presidential tenure is over and we can look back at his real legacy.

That puts him in line with the likes of Nelson Mandela and Desmund Tutu, people who really suffered to get what they got and made a difference in the world. The prestigious Nobel prize for peace to Obama is preposterous. There are other people who are doing things more worthwhile. He should be judged after his presidency in view of what he dreamt and achieved. This is too premature.

On the same lines, Pakistan should support Edhi, who started from scratch and running a huge trust. Imran Khan, who opened a free cancer hospital for the poor or Shahzad Roy who is using unusual means to raise literacy in this country.

Obama for Nobel peace is just shameful.

It didn’t seem that astonishing initially with all the media hype about Obama. Portraiting him as an angel, who’s mere selection is history, who’s going to liberate the world of famine, hunger, stop the war against terrorism, who’s going to stop the oppression of the poor by the rich.

But, if you think a bit practically what has change? Is all these expectations or even some of them are even near to their destiny? The America is still carrying on its war against terrorism, the poor are still being oppressed by the rich , there is still famine in African countries, G8 is still maneuvering to retain its power and suppress the poor. What has change? Yes , America does have a softer image in the world as compared to that in the era of George Bush and probably that shift in image is the main reason for decorating Mr. Obama with this prize.

If we look at the history of the Nobel Peace Prize , you could find persons with strong impact on society , with a history of involvement in Peace making. But Obama does not full fill any of these condition. Neither Obama had any history of Peace making neither the initiatives made by him are expected to make any strong positive changes in the world. Lets hope this prize , do let him think a bit more from the global peace perspective besides securing American National Interest.

A nobel peace prize is different from the other nobel scientific prizes that it recognizes effort, commitment and resolve rather than succesful result (as in case of science). Why should the president of the most powerful nation (whose defence budget is more than the next ten nations combined)even try to woo the muslim world ?

Right from Indonesia to Cairo, the man is indeed respected for his vision for a better future for the world.

When the americans went into Iraq, he was not a senator. But he did oppose the war right from the start. Pakistan is probably the only place in the world where people dont like Obama (understandably for his Af-Pak policy).

But the betterment of Pakistan lies not in Obama’s Af-Pak Policy but in Pakistan’s own foreign policy/ internal policy !!! It’s one of the few countries in the world without a clear demarcation between it’s foreign and domestic policies.

Pakistan’s destiny is in it’s own hands. If they don’t realize that, then the Kerrys and Lugars of this world will decide it for them.

Bottomline: Obama deserves it, tell me one more person (better than Obama) who tried to make this world a better place this year?

In my opinion, Obama is a charismatic president who commands respect and admiration from many corners of the world. His foreign policy seems to have a far bigger ‘diplomatic cushion’ than his predecessor.

While I support his foreign policy as well as the framework he has set out, only time will tell whether his efforts will prove fruitful. I hope that we can have peace, but most of all I wish that an environment of mutual understanding arises as a result of his presidency.

His presidency has heralded the spirit of diplomacy over that of force – there have been historic ‘icebreakers’, from negotiations with Iran to the decision to close Guantanamo and pull out of Iraq.

Let us hope that things improve.

As a Muslim American I am proud of the fact that the President Obama got the award. But I am confused as what does Peace means to the west? When Gaza was being bombed daily with US made banned Phosphorous bombs, President Obama did not use his influence on Israel to stop the attacks on unarmed civilians. Almost six months after the brutal campaign two of US closest Alies (Israel and Egypt) are choking Palestinians to death, economically, morally and socially. Israel continues to build settlements in the West Bank, making a mockery of President Obama.

Its an irony that a president who is continuing the two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq has been given a Nobel Peace prize. Obama has uptil now proven himself to be big on words about peace but he is certainly lacking in taking decisive action.

Perhaps this is an attempt by the prize committe to be more proactive and influence Obama to act in the direction of peace. After winning the Nobel peace prize, it will be a little more difficult for obama to start new wars against Iran etc. or to make escalatory actions in the current wars.

My comments are in my mail to President Obama as below.

    Mr. Barak Hussain Obama,

    President of U S A.

    Greetings.

Please accept heartfelt felicitations on winning the Nobel Peace prize 2009.

Many congratulations to you and your family. In fact, the entire peace loving population of the globe is not only happy and joyously celebrating your award, but is also looking towards you for honoring your promise for bringing change. And remember, your promised change will only come through sincere and relentless efforts of you and your team of not only White House, but of the entire members of the United Nations.

We the citizens of the most suffered nation on the earth, will always be praying and positively contributing for the success of your genuine efforts for peace. However, in my humble opinion, peace will only prevail over terrorism, if, powerful nations of the world like USA, will put their weight behind those weak people who are being subjected to extreme cruelty (for example using American supplied air force planes to kill unarmed Palestinians and killings of millions of Kashmiris) for demanding right to live honorably, through vote of self determination. Secondly, the fleecing of the poor by the World Inc. is another reason of discord, prevailing throughout the world. If economic justice is not dispensed to the exploited down trodden teeming millions of the world, no one will reap the benefits and dividends of the peace, you are trying so hard to achieve.

Wishing you and your team best of luck in your endeavors for world peace.
