Shifting battlegrounds

Shifting battlegrounds

The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has not only claimed the attack, but also made it clear that the spillover from the military operations in Swat and other tribal areas will not end in Lahore.

‘Residents should leave the cities of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Multan,’ the purported aide of Baitullah Mehsud warned.

Is the Pakistani state ready to deal with the emerging threat? What measures should the authorities take to ensure the security of citizens in cities and the rest of the country?

I have lived in UK for over four years and just returned early last year. It was post Iraq war time when terror threat was very high. In July 2005, terror attacks finally took place killing over 50. Two weeks later, another attempt was made with the bombs failing to detonate.

Even before that time, the government announced that it is a matter of “when” not “if” that the terrorists will strike.

However, the government left no stone unturned to catch terrorists and they even captured a number of terrorists. How did they stop the terrorists from striking again?

They have invested on security of their country wisely and heavily for past many decades. That has worked. Security cameras around the streets and roads monitor every desired person. A list of people has been which pose threat to the national security and they are monitored every second. All their conversations are recorded and acitivties monitored. This is called “resolve” to tackle a threat. Merely calling the terrorists as inhuman and coward is not just enough.

Taliban is a virus and a mental disease, they have perfected their brain washing techniques over the decades when we all were looking the other side. This extra ordinary brain washing technique is so effective that it can easily convert a peace loving human being into a flesh eating zombie.

I think our psychs should also study that how these people developed such an effective technique, yes I agree that some say they leverage from religious, poverty, and illustrative factors of our society. One thing is for sure that this is a one way road once they brain wash you its very hard to bring that person back to civil norms. For that military needs to eliminate them completely while our doctors and psychologist find the cure for this virus and mental disease.

  4. Let me tell you with full conviction that these byzantine creatures cant take the whole society hostage.By calling citizens to leave cities is simply calling for death…They want to show you their strength in the manner great Army of pakistan is doing in swat……Let me tell you once and for all, that nations don’t prosper in the shadows of guns but they prospers in the shadows of rich culture and values.Talibans have no culture no values. They are not humanbeings. They are stone age people who have no respect for humanity and is slaughtering them like animals…Let me tell these coward blokes we have to live for ever in this land but soon u have to quit and leave our land.As long as America is there in Afghanistan we have to feel the grunt….One thing i simply cant understand how skilfully they execute their operation like one in Lahore in broad day light…By attacking ISI is akin attacking pakistan centeral nerve…We must find who is supporing them,as they are an uneducated youth and they can’t do it unless somebody is helping them…CIA and Raw can’t be ruled out,but i dont’ know why, wats wrong with our leaders that they don’t pinpoint it…if it would have happened in India, pakistan was the first maligining target…but why we lack this moral courage that we cant even name them?Talibans cant sustain them on their own, they are not God messengers in this world, neither they are the sons of prophets or from suhabas who enjoys God blessings….In this case intrinsic search must be done that who is that hidden hand helping these rebels?Unless we dont find them they will be playing with us like this. But if we simply wait for world leaders to renounce and promise aid for us we are asking for Gods wrath………May ALLAH help us in this imbroglio…Amin

Tariq said “Few terrorists CAN NOT defeat a nation of 170 million strong.”

Tariq, you have to accept that there are significant number of terrorists and their protectors and sympathisers in Pakistan. These protectors and sympathisers saved the terrorist by not reporting their whereabouts to Government of Pakistan and Army. And now they are paying high price, being killed or wounded by terrorists as well as in cross fire between Army and terrorists.

There is no solution except ruthless and brutal solution to weed out terrorists in Pakistan specially in NWFP.

If Pakistan has to get foreign troops with sofisticated equipment to weed out terrorists, Pakistan should go for it. Preservation of peace loving human beings life and property should be the first priority of Pakistan and this should be done at all costs including allowing foreign troops to fight side by side with Pakistani troops.

Pakistan appears to be hide-outs of many terrorists leaders. They are Muslims just in name. Yazeed was also a Muslim but terrorist. All terrorists are not only enemies of Islam but also enemies of humanity.

It is true that many innocent lives will be lost in fight against the terrorists. But when the last terrorists is dead or captured, the future generation will live peacefully without fear of terrorism, Insha Allah.

  6. Ahmed bin Babar says:

Bomb blasts in Lahore & Peshawar…

Immediately after every bomb blast and loss of innocent lives our fighter jets should lift up from the bases and bomb the suspected (specified through intelligence) militants’ hideouts and their training facilities irrespective of their being in the settled areas or in the tribal belt.

This strategy (treatment) should go on until the last militant (terrorist) either surrenders to the authorities or is sent to the ports of hell. They shouldn’t be given any space to rest, run or re-group themselves under the PAK skies.

For this reason we should also upgrade and re-vitalize our intelligence sources and resources to defeat our enemies (internal & external) and defend our national integrity, solidarity and peace.

I can not believe, when i hear such claims like “Residents should leave the cities”, what sick purpose are these serving and what is that TTP i believe that this and all the related organizations who adore similar agendas are channel used by the enemy states especially India and Afghanistan. But our “Non Existing” Government seems to be too preoccupied with their “non-issues” to comprehend this fact.

  8. Chari says:

I applaud Tariq’s spirit! He says few terrorists can not defeat the nation.
However, the question is ‘How few are they?’
They are Hard Core, Militants, Near Militants, Sympathisers, Unsure and normal citizens. This problem has been brooding for decades, albeit as an arm of military and ISI.
What do the militants want is very clear. They want to destroy. What the Pakistani Citizens want is also clear. They want to live in peace and prosper.
What do the leaders want is not clear. Many of their actions seem to be selfishly motivated (money in their pockets). When that truly changes then Pakistan will do well! Tariq needs to work on that!

  9. MUHAMMAD YAQOOB KHAN LASHARI says:

pakistan needs the real and genuine support of religious and political parties.

  10. Tariq Mian, Canada says:

Alongwith repulsing the TTP, The State of Pakistan should investigate and find out— who the TTP is working for???????????
The threat to dismantle the Rebublic is very real.
The ‘Top Brass in Pakistan’ must work harder to pin point the culprit, so that an everlasting peace could emerge.

  11. Allah Daad says:

This is a war of nerves, and Taliban know how to play it. Political parties, Religious groups and media are divided and cannot guide this nation. Establishment is too timid and corrupt. There is only one hope, if ordinary people rise against these barbarians.

  12. farzana says:

Ironically these ‘few terrorists’ were bred to fight proxy wars in Afghanistan and India…

  13. A few renowned and so called eminent anchors of TV and some columnists ought to be sent to the war zone for negotiations, they should have the courage to live among them and bring their future plans and be part of them in the war zone areas. They are requested not to confuse the people of Pakistan.

  14. Viquar Syed says:

Although the military initiative started in haste, to sync it with US visit of our beloved President, nevertheless, this operation MUST reach its logical goal.
Destroy the adversary or to weaken it to an extent where they are no longer a threat.
As per the measures of securing civilians is concenred, is by involving them in the securing their local areas. Muhalla committies, local police, need to maintain a vigil, unattended bags in shopping areas are to be reported, incorrectly parked vehicles need to be taken notice of, men wearing inadequte amount of clothing for the weather are a cause for alarm as well.
Above all defeat the militants by our will is the only way to show them that they are not wanted here in this country.

  15. Aamnah Khan says:

Mr.Mahsud, his followers and supporters are the one who’ll be moving away from our soil or most probably away from this Earth.
So lets no be worried about him or what he says.

  16. Tariq Khan says:

Few terrorists CAN NOT defeat a nation of 170 million strong.

These are their cowardly act before losing. We will defend our cities by ourselves.

  17. Hafiz says:

The slogan for Pakistan should be changed from “Pakistan Zindabad” — to — “Pakistan se Zinda Bhaag”.
