What provokes Baitullah Mehsud?

Dawn.com invites its readers to debate current affairs in this forum.

On Tuesday, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud claimed responsibility for the attack on the Manawan police academy and threatened more such assaults in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the US. He stated that President Asif Zardari was ‘following US policies and allowing drone attacks’ and vowed that the Taliban would continue to commits act of terror until missile attacks are halted. He also claimed that the Taliban have the ability to attack Washington and threatened to target the White House. Attacks against NATO forces in Afghanistan were also on Mehsud’s list.

A few days before the Manawan attack, on March 25, the US State Department put Baitullah Mehsud on its most wanted list and announced a $5 million bounty for capturing him or providing information that could help convict him.

Do you think the US State Department’s announcement of a bounty for Mehsud provoke the Manawan attack? If the drone attacks were to seize, would Mehsud call off future terrorist attacks? Is Mehsud’s real target the US and its affiliate NATO forces? What exactly provokes Baitullah Mehsud?

I condemn Baitullah, Osama and their agents in Pakistan. They are one and samething.

  2. Adam says:

Why does Pakistan allow its territory to be violated and used by the drones to attack its own citizens? To these people who are attacked by the drones on a routine basis is as simple as ‘The friend of my enemy is my enemy’. Its time for Pakistan to stop being perpectual beggers and start to look at the interest of its people.

Its unfortunate but true that all the inhumane acts are carried out in the name of religion today.Getting rid of Mehsud will not achieve the ultimate goal of a secure and stable Pakistan.More thought is required on the root cause of these issues. And a solution can only be viable if acted upon by a lobby of muslim nations standing by each other to protect its lands and soverignty. Pakistan is a play ground for the world powers at the moment, a stable pakistan is very bad news to a lot of nations, including India and US itself. Just look at the figures the US congress spends on their army each year to keep it afloat.Mehsud is a very small figure, its the ideology that needs to be changed in the minds of young muslim men.

close our border with Afghanistan, fight these terrorists at the border –lets remove afghan refugees….and american should stop the drug trade in Afghanistan –which is having bad effect on Pakistan also.

this is guerilla warfare. It must be fought using counter-guerilla tactics. Our Army Mashallah every day is training and adapting.

We need to promote economic development, and proper Islam. People need to be more spiritual. Promote art, and cultural activities also. We are Pakistan –rich in different cultures and heritage.

People need to be more patriotic and do the right thing. PAKISTAN FIRST.

I speak from Kurram Agency –and I salute all my PAkistani brothers and sisters sindhis panjabis kashmiris and baluch. Salaamo Aleykum.

You fight or start a war against a certain “Believe”, “Policy” or a “Man” contradicting your own policies as War is just another way of continuing your own policies. However; what will you do when you cannot find anything against you but still need to control a region (as it is one of the major steps to be taken for your policy to proceed forward)? … This question is being answered very clearly by US since the last decade or so…Create Terrorists and then try to kill them yourself…or Create a dictator, (sometimes use him) and then start a war against him to save the world… forgetting in the first place that it was they themselves who created “The Monster”!..

My question is; do we really believe that people like Baitullah sitting thousands of miles away from US in the most difficult terrain and with minimum supplies and resources launch an attack against them ? Or all this terrorist, Osama, Bitullah…Mambo Jumbo the first step in continuation of US policies ?…

Some developments in the last week are really strange, actually the timings are really strange…US very openly starting to point figures at the tribal belt and Baluchistan as the strong holds of “Al-Qaeda”,.. Soon enough a head price is offered for Baitullah and an Attack is carried out by Baituallah in Lahore Police Training Center…Coincidence?..I don’t think so..

Saddam in Iraq, then Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and now Al-Qaeda in Pakistan tribal region…its really clear what policy America is pursuing…

All these factitious Al-Qaeda and Taliban Terrorists are a very good excuse for US to start a war in the region, as its their policy to control the region or at least have a government that is in line with their policies..So now the question is; Are these Terrorists (Baitullah, Osama, etc etc) against or with US ?…

    Answer is a simple one…

  6. M I Khan says:

Those who are unabale to think for themselves, to have the courage to say ‘enough is enough’ and to be fooled around by fools like most mullahs (thekedars of paradise) do fool Pakistani masses in their hate filled propaganda in Friday sermons should not wonder if they are overpowered by the likes of Baitullah and Fazlullah!

  7. Francis says:

Baitullah Mehsud is a radical. Only radical can do such things in the name of region. Radical loves religion more than people.

We can see Allah only loving others. Because God is love. If u do not love others . That means u r the part of Evil one.

  8. Malik Rashid says:

Baitullah Mehsud is the ideal product of the Pakistan establishment. He lives on the mountain like a shaheen and stands up against the “Kuffar”. The elites of Pakistan meant it for all Pakistanis, except for their own children, who were sent to english schools and abroad. Mehsud was miseducated into becoming a perpetual warrior and he could be as Napoleonistic in his ambitions as his military mentors. It would be no wonder if he imagines himself as the “Khalifa” or some heavenly deity. Given some land to rule, such characters indulge in repression and nepotism.

  9. Bob Vental says:

I think person like Mehsud does not need justification. They will find any reason to do any thing that he likes and believes.

What justification he had for blowing up schools? Any logic of any kind will make you think.

I think news paper like Dawn, should not even allow people to put any justification for such action.

In India we had one such Bandit called Verrapan. He used to kidnap and kill people to earn money and than he used to spend some of this to people to get their sympathy and support. He used to justify that his action were correct because corrupt people are making money from natural resources from forest. It took long time for security forces to neutralize him. Also there were lot of politician that supported him to get votes.

So in short rather getting worried about what action he will take. Concentrate on getting him to the ground. I am sure if people are interested and army/ISI wants you should be able to catch him and bring him to justice.

  10. Suleman Maniya,Göteborg,Sweden says:

Ulemas should meet and declare him a revert! Imagine what service they would do to muslims and draw a line on these suicide bombings. He is no more than a blackmailer, murderer, thief and you name .

  11. merwat says:

The important things is waht our agencies are doing. How he is getting so much fund to have so many fighter. First they have to cut of the fund. Wziri are famous for chyanging loyalties with money. All these fighters working with hime could work gainst him if the Government is able to facilitate. But the money the GOVT is getting is not used for the puropse the are getting it

  12. ujmi says:

To be very honest, I do sometime wonder if attack on Sri Lankan team and attack on Manawan Police training school was an act to galvanize us into action? Someone wanted a change in public perceptions by hitting exactly where people take such things.

But then again, even if it was indeed the case, I still believe that we Pakistanis need to be united to rid our country off the scourge of these terrorists who want to change our way of life.

If Baitullah was the instrument in the Lahore attack, and that is a reaction to US announcement- then this attack should have taken place somewhere in Afghanistan on NATO/US forces.

  13. iblees says:

provoke is not the term to use here, ‘instruction’ now that is the key word in this situation.

  14. Muhammad says:

If Baitullah Mehsud and his companions think they are doing Jihad, they should know that killing innocent people is Haram. And they are killing no one but Muslims.

  15. Hassan says:

We shall not terrorists to give their manifestoes, we are still fooling ourseleves. What provocation? It is Pakistan’s growth, which is provoking such terrorists..

We should be brave enough in accepting our wrong doings first and correct them.

In swat, Maulan Sufi Mohammed, what is he upto and look at the language he uses against democracy?

  16. rizwan says:

It could be the bounty.. but in his letter he stated that Pakistan officials should start support some groups in those areas… that might be against his group.

  17. Asim says:

It was said that if we succeed in arriving at a cease fire agreement with these militant , they would cease their activities but they have actually sped up these activities. State by no mean should give in to these kind of bigoted fanatics, but collateral damages must be avoided, a well coherent and integrated strategy is needed to curb these elements, these people are puppets of India and Israel , consciously or unconsciously their activities have been benefiting these two countries. Bait ullah is a corrupt person , they are using islam for achieving their shameful objectives, Money , Power ,money and ignorance are the prime motivators for Bait ullah

  18. HB Mallah says:

Pakistan Peoples Party is victim of terrorism and lost great leader but let Nawaz league should understand the situation and should cooperate with PPP in war against terrorists like Mehsud.

The unmanned aircraft is good technology to search and target enemies of Islam, democracy and Pakistan. USA should handover this type of technology to Pakistan after a guarantee that Pakistan state will never use that type of technology against neighbouring countries but only to cope with terrorists.

I will appeal media anchors, columnist and think tank of Pakistan not to support terrorist killing innocent people of Pakistan. Those who support terrorist should ask from people who lost lives of their beloveds relative, leaders and protectors policemen.

Let us challenge B Mehsud that be a brave tribal and come to people and get vote from them and govern the country and no doubt the nation will go with you. But being in hideouts and in caves you can not win democratic people of Pakistan. And if B Mehsud is thinking that because of his militancy and pressure people of Pakistan will support his on screen political allies than he is wrong.

Police and people are ready to fight against terrorism in Pakistan
