Reliving March 25, 1992

March 25, 1992 will always be remembered as one of the most glorious days in the history of Pakistan cricket. It was on this day, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, that Imran Khan’s ‘cornered tigers’ completed their fairytale journey at the cricket world cup. Wasim Akram’s magic, Ramiz Raja’s flight of victory, Aamir Sohail’s sajda, Imran Khan’s controversial speech are the various moments that spring to mind when one recollects the magical 22-run win.

What is your favourite moment from the final? Where did you watch it? Did you think Pakistan would be able to pull it off? Who was your player of the match?

It was an unbelievable victory which swelled us with feeling of great pride. It was all teamwork and Imran Khan controlled that team, no doubt he is even capable today as well to unite people in a team if one more chance is given to him. Similarly we can also perform well in every field and sport once we are a united nation. I request to public of Pakistan to be one and MOVE AHEAD.
    Long Live Pakistan

It was interesting game of cricket,,,, it did swing up and down, but the moment that i could not forget with a blink of an eye were the two deliveries by Wasim Akram to Chris Lewis and Alan Lamb, which were inevitably swinging both ways, to send Pakistan on the verge of victory after securing a critical advantage during that moment. it really turned the game in our favor, which was wonderful to watch.

  3. indian says:

great match I was a kid but I remember the match for Wasim bowling and great team spirit.
It was my first world cup though India did not do well but won against Pakistan, nevertheless Pakistan won the world cup from nowhere it was one of the best world cups I have seen
the team had a great leader.

  4. Asad says:

Four moments stand out for me…

Wasim Akram bowling Allan Lamb and Richie Benaud saying,” What a great delivery left arm around the wicket, Alan Lamb has been cleaned up. Perhaps….so too England.”

Next ball…”Lewis,Reeve,Pringle,DeFritas, Fairbrother is still there…..Subtract Lewis from that list…Wasim Akram is on a hat-trick..”

Third moment….Mushtaq bowls to Reeve who is caught brilliantly by Rameez Raja…
Bill Lawry says,” Good catch! Almost a collision! Fine bowling and a magnificent catch! Rameez Raja running with the ball judged that beautifully! PAKISTAN ON FIRE AT THE MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND!”

The greatest moment was the hug between Imran and Javed…it symbolized the coming together of the two pillars of Pakistan cricket…and showed how two people as different and controversial as the two, could come together and do brilliant things for their country..

    God bless Pakistan…

  5. IFTIKHAR says:

Yes, indeed it was, it is and it will be a glorious day in the history of Pakistan Cricket. Imran Khan was a great cricket/leader and the recent turmoil in PCB has made a mess of the Pakistan Cricket. It looks like that our players have no respect for their Captain and seniors. I hope that they all come to there sense and play cricket like the Legendry Imran Khan, Zahir Abbas, Majid Khan, etc used to play. Lets play for Pakistan and show to the WORLD that we are a Proud Nation. Pakistan Zindabad.

I was in college in the US. Since there was no internet or satellite TV (seems unreal now, since I watched last years’ TV 20 final on my laptop), I had no clue what was going on. A week or two before, I called Pakistan and my mom told me that Pakistan was losing badly, so lost interest. I didn’t even know when was the final but a day or two after the final, a friend of mine told me that Pakistan won the world cup. I simply could not believe it. Later that year I went to visit Pakistan and saw the match, I would say Wasim Akram’s bowled of Alan lamb was my favorite moment, the delivery was simply beautiful and the ball was unplayable.

  7. KKNIAZI says:

For me the best moment was the CORNERED TIGER speech (sort of) at the toss. Those who don’t remember, here’s the link,

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iyk19yAJIE

And those who think Imran Khan was controversial at the end was not at the toss.

    Cheers,

Pakistan has won the world cup as underdogs and since than we are the one of the most exciting teams on cricket scene, and that had done a lot good to Asian cricket and we have seen Srilanka winning it in Pakistan.Since winning the world cup we are one of the top teams and have progressed alot, and we are the Brazilian team of cricket,as we have played a big roll since 1992, and our voices are heard and to say that it is not much different at the top,as to win again we have to spark again that fire and it will be a great one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Naveed Mushtaq says:

There was no electricity in our village at that time so we arranged a generator to watch the final on a black and white TV set. That was the only set in whole village and that one big room was packed with people of every age. It was pretty hot inside that room due to no electricity but we were so excited to watch the live match. It was a memorable event in my life. The moment when Wasim took two wickets on two consecutive balls was the best moment in that match.

  10. Atif Shaukat says:

The best moment of the match was when Wasim bhai took those two wickets !!!! it was all magic moment and i remember next day the whole family celebrated and we stayed at home.

  11. Khawer says:

I was only 13 but it was a magical moment for every Pakistani when Ramiz Raja took the last wicket catch. I am sure with the crowd roaring, every Pakistani in or outside the country was up on their feet. It was Imran’s leadership and his teams belief in him which lead us to the victory and ofcourse What Allah had written for Pakistan, no one could have changed it. Long Live Pakistan.

  12. Raza says:

Allan Lamb’s wicket by Tiger Wasim Akram.

  13. Oojee says:

I was too young to completely understand all the hype. But I knew it was something important because despite our exams, my mother would let us turn on the TV and check the score.
It was something “colorful”. The colored clothing of the players was obviously more interesting than all white gear. And after the win, I remember some of my elder cousins/friends boasting about knowing the lyrics of “some cricket song in english”. Children in the school would proudly show their “world cup trophy” shaped stationery items especially sharpeners.

  14. Naveed Ahmad says:

Yes those two magic deliveries by Wasim, but I lost all the respect for Wasim Akram when he was accused of match fixing (quarter final with India in India).

  15. Ro says:

Clearly Imran’s speech was controversial. But I think there must’ve been a lot going through his mind at that point so he didn’t intend to undermine the significance of anyone’s effort. Paki openers gave a terrible start and Imran, a bowler, went to bat and took responsibility. Otherwise, the entire team would’ve been out for 150. So credit for having the guts to go 1-down and take responsibility definitely goes to Imran.

  16. Ahsan says:

I still remember very well when Alan Lamb and Fairbrother were playing, and it did seem that Pakistan was losing the grip. Little bit disappointed, I went downstairs to drink some water. When coming back I whispered a small pray to God. By the time I reached back to the couch and still not seated yet, that Wasim bowled an in-swinging yorker to Lamb. I still remember that bowl was till in the air, reaching to Lamb, when deep down from my heart a unhearable voice came “That’s it!!” And the next you could see the stumps were shattered. It’s all happen in less than a second.

  17. Aamir says:

The moment when Imran and Miandad hugged each other on winning the cup is unforgettable.

People have been very negative about what Imran said in his speech, but they should focus on the whole rather than a small part of an amazing time in our history. I remember very few moments in our country’s history when we felt as united as we did at the time.

Just to put it in perspective, I was giving my A level exams in Karachi at the time, the matches were being telecast live during Ramadan and you had to get up early in the morning to catch the action. But I could not study or sleep during these days and all my energy went in to following the matches. My exams didn’t suffer though :)

I have to add, Pakistan’s performance since then, especially in the Word Cups has been very dissappointing and I stopped following cricket as passionately ever since. I still think Imran’s strong leadership helped the team and we again need a strong leader for the team and for the country.

  18. Obaid says:

    wasim akram the hero !

  19. haseeb talal khan says:

I was very young at the time, but still remember the moment, and in my opinion, Inzi and Wasim were the players who really performed exceptional. Inzamam who really throwed his bat against the Kiwis in the semis and who can forget those two deceptive deliveries bowled by Wasim in the final, the outgoing delivery to lamb and then incoming delivery to Lewis. And don’t forget the contributions of Imran khan and Javed Miandad. But Wasim Akram was the real hero of that grand final at Melbourne…

Still remember the sehri times..the matches usually started…It was really the most cherished times…

  20. Karim says:

It definitely was the sajda for me.

What we lack now is discipline and dreamers. You have to have a dream to achieve something and have a discipline to guide you.

  21. Imran Tahir says:

I was in the 12th grade at the time living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with my parents.
I remember my father dropped me off to this housing compound where the match was being televised on a big screen.
We all sat on the floor in a big hall after paying 10 Riyals as the cover charge.
Always believed from the start of the match that its there for Pakistan’s taking.
Best moments were Wasim Akram’s 2 scalps in 2 balls. That was the turning point and loved those deliveries.
Imran’s and Miandad’s patient innings during the first half also made the difference.

  22. Ayesha says:

The victory was a result of teamwork. I was quite young and wasn’t much interested in watching cricket at that time. I had watched it at home with everyone around. And my favorite moment was of course Wasim Akram’s wickets. My player of the match was Wasim Akram because his bowling did put the England under pressure.

I don’t believe Pakistan can pull off such victory in the present situation when the whole team and management has no idea where Pakistan cricket is going.

  23. FAWAD R (NY) says:

What a team! Imran Khan lead the team with a Vision. Those days were great and Pakistan Cricket team was at the peak of its game. No one after that team played for their country with the same dignity and honor. I think we should change the system and throw away all the “brown trash ” players from the team. Let real players play with their hearts, souls and the spirit to represent Pakistan the way it deserves to be represented. I wish Allah blesses us with one more Imran Khan , where we can enjoy Cricket again and continue the excitement through our next generation. Fawad r

  24. Naveed says:

Nostalgic, truely. I was flying fighters then in a remote Pakistani city called Shorkot. I remember getting up early to watch the matches live all thru the world cup. Ammi ji recorded matches for me that I could not watch. Reaching the final was a miracle and winning the final was ecstatic, at par with winning the 1984 hockey olympics final. To me Imran Khan was the man without whose leadership Pakistan was no where. Wasim Akram’s two wicktets on two succesive deliveries was the greatest moment for me. I always thought Imran and Miandad should finally win the world cup for us because both of them were battle hardeded true professionals. Lets salute Imran and his tigers. Wondering will v ever have that fighting spirit in our sportsmen again. Puneet Kumar has said it right.

  25. Khurram Khan says:

Yes, that was indeed one of the greatest moment of Pakistan’s cricket history. But now that is past and we now need same kind of leadership stuff from Imran Khan. Our country is in dire straits and this Khan has full ability and capability to cope up with this kind of situation. All he needs a great team, like he had in WC92. Best of Luck IK. We love you and proud of You. Best of luck with your PTI.
