Buner: Swat part deux?

Buner: Swat part deux?

On Thursday, the government announced that eight platoons of paramilitary troops have been sent to Pakistan’s Buner district, which has been infiltrated by the Taliban. Frontier Constabulary platoons have been dispatched to protect government buildings and bridges in Buner. In recent days, Taliban militants have been patrolling the area, snatching and searching vehicles, and ransacking government offices.

After the passage of the Nizam-i-Adl resolution, how will government forces ensure security in Buner and other parts of Malakand? Should Taliban activities in Buner and Shangla be viewed as a violation of the regulation? Are we in for a Swat part deux?

hmmm… 8 platoons or around 300-400 soldiers. That’s nothing to combat around 5000 well armed Taliban. At least 50,000 soldiers need to be send to crush this once and for all …. just like SriLankan army is doing right now to LTTE.

  2. Gulam Rajani says:

It is very easy to say let the Taliban come and establish Sharia when you live in the U.K. or elsewhere. It is not your sister or wife who will get flogged if she leaves the house without a male accompanying her. It is not you who will have to grow a long unkempt beard. It is not you who cannot watch Tv or listen to music or have your daughter go to school. Your sons will not have to go to Madrassas and forget science and mathematics or general development.

Over here the Mullas will decide what is or isnt. And some of you are suggesting we talk to these sinner. FORGET IT.

  3. hn says:

    Smart Muslim,

Here is the problem. Try to answer these questions.

    1) Who is an expert on knowing what is true Sharia?
    2) How do you know what Taliban wants to implement is true sharia? They have not read any other books. So how do they know anything?
    3) Clearly you type english so you must have had a non Talibanic education. Would you recommend your children to have only Talibani education?
    4) The Prophet was never anti education or career for women for he married a career woman. But clearly Taliban don’t see things that way. So who do you trust-Prophet or the Taliban?
5)What is wrong with people choosing their leader? Didn’t the tribes choose the Prophet as their leader? So who would qualify as a leader for imposing Sharia and why?

  4. ali says:

we have to fight them one day because their values and ours are right on clash. This is the war for the survival of our traditions, culture, values and above all our freedom. Nations rise after sacrifices, Pakistan Army must not shy away from this noble cause. Quaid’s vision is not be challenged.A nation can’t be hijacked by thugs. Secondly, years of deprivation and slavery to own masters have nurtured hatred, first find the enemy within (get our act togather) and then confront across the line.

  5. sher khan says:

The children of all our politicians live in uk/usa/dubai,and if pak falls to taliban, all our leaders will flee to these countries and live a secure and comfortable life there. Thats the main problem! our leaders know that they will be safe along with there families no matter what happens to pakistan! bring back there kids! let them live with rest of pakistanis! and let them know they wont be allowed to escape the country like they have done many time in the past!

  6. Jumma Chuhdhri says:

Two options, one outcome: Either Military/People confronts taliban, or let Taliban take over …

In either case outcome will be similar to killing fields of Cambodia with some mix of flogging.

I would prefer the first option (not into S&M)

  7. Razzle, Karachi says:

@Smart Muslim: you are probably the most naive person on the internet.

The Taliban are out to capture as many places as they can. These are uneducated, violent, gun carrying people. So what if they have learnt the Quran? These are the people that have destroyed Islam and the image of Islam. They kill, they loot, they are ignorant. And yet you think there is nothing wrong with have a killing, looting and ignorant people in power?

I am a muslim too. But there is NOTHING that I have in common with the Taliban.

Your comment is really the craziest (perhaps naive?) comment I’ve read in a while.

  8. Saf says:

    Smart Muslim,

The naivety is perplexing, but not surprising as there are a great number of literate Pakistanis who genuinely think this is alright.

Most Taliban don’t carry weapons? Are you serious? Pray tell then how they beat the stuffing out of the Pakistan army then? Pious mosques? I grant you that they provided a social service, however chaining up young boys, teaching their twisted brand of beliefs and ignoring any sort of science curriculum has churned out more ignorant citizens and less social benefits.

What’s wrong with their Sharia law? Well its being done at gun point for one. Then its a Wahabi/Salafi/Deobandi mixed with tribal customs that most Pakistanis don’t follow. They leave no room for minorities in the setup encouraging sectarian intolerance that leads to violence and death.

Do you think you’ll be as free to use the internet the way you do now on the DAWN forum when they come over to your neighborhood? You’re about to lose many liberties that people currently enjoy without it being imposed on them.

Those who were killed by them by false allegations and homicide bombings were Muslim brothers too. Or did you conveniently forget about them? These guys ain’t brothers. They’re Kharijites (Google or Wiki it).

Smart Muslim, I’m afraid your name is very misleading…I seriously hope you are being sarcastic. Even then, its not funny…

  9. Ammad Ansari says:

Anybody who is thinking of having a dialogue with single-minded people is completely misguided. These guys dont know the meaning of words, they know war. The only solution is to crush them. Learn something from Sri Lanka.

  10. lilly says:

    To Smart Muslim,

I just want give small advise. Just go to Swat valley with your family, friends and relatives(whoever supports islamic law) for a year and see how talibans are ruling there practically. Compare the pros and cons then demand Islamic Law in entire Pakitan, if still you feel that is correct. As of my openion, TSNM and TTP are trying to spread their wings to occupy entire Pakistan with help of foreign militants in the name of Islamic Law. If that is the case, Pakistan will be isolated soon by entire world. If Pakistan people supports
the TSNM/TTP and whole Pakistan is in their hands, still piece is not garantee, since they fight each other. Remember how small kingdoms use to fight each other for land, victory and money. Samething happens

    To Ali (Uk),

Do you think fighting against Taliban is waste, since your military is not capable off and you think that it is shame infront of India? Pakistan is breaking/loosing part by part day by day and you have no feelings that country is getting worse day by day?

It is shame that still pakistanies are not realsing the truth and still living in their imaginary world.

  11. Behram says:

Buner is part of the old Malakand Division and is one of the areas where Nizam-i-Adl will be applied. I’m sure the people there have plenty of sympathy for the Taliban.

  12. Pearl Molloy says:

Please tell Mr. Smart Muslim that he is not very Smart, he was sharia Law to be implemented by the peace loving Taleban??? is he living in cloud cuckoo land. Pakistan Flag has a white part in it for the minorities, where does he propose he go to since they are quite happy following their religion instead of being persecuted by the Taleban who are not peace loving he must be wearing rose coloured glasses. Let me show him an article which was not posted in any newspapers.

This my Mr. Smart Muslim is your peace loving Taleban!!! GET REAL.

Good Morning to all of you !

This is to inform you all that yesterday Taliban attack Church in Taiser town (karachi). This area is located near Nazimabad.

They reportedly misbehaved with the women ,and asked them to accept Islam otherwise they will kill them, they burnt Holy Bibles and the worst, they have killed people. Suddenly the Rangers came and stopped them.

  13. Maqbool Rehman says:

This time will be different because of international pressure.

  14. sher khan says:

its about time.We should stop these barbarians now before they destroy everything. and to SMART MUSLIM,these people came and looted the NGOs killed 5 villagers, flogged people with no evidence, behead government officials and send suicide bomber killing many innocent Muslims around pakistan. What sort of Islam is that. Some people will never learn till it effects their sister/mother or one of your family member get killed in these bombs. Wake up.you dont need taliban to practice your religion.

  15. shaq says:

Pakistan needs to kick these characters out of our country. These thugs need to be wiped out. I cant imagine our govt is handing out compensations to these people.

  16. Firoz says:

What a joke and lack of vision and leadership. Read following:

“Frontier Constabulary platoons have been dispatched to protect government buildings and bridges in Buner.”

And what about people of Buner? Are they not worth to be protected first before empty govt. buildings and bridges ? I am not surprised by today state of our country. People of Pakistan need to be protected first before empty buildings and bridges period

  17. wb says:

It’s about time that Pakistan faces Taliban upfront. All fronts of society; military, political parties, and media must be a part of a comprehensive strategy to confront so called champions of Islam. People of Pakistan must realize that now is the time to stand up and be counted against the forces of extremism. Lets get together to fight this curse before it’s too late.

  18. Ali (Uk) says:

To be honest i think the Pakistan army will be slaughtered if they enter Buner or Swat again, and it will make them weak against India. I think we should sit down with the taliban and talk with them rather than confrontation.

  19. Smart Muslim says:

It is the legal right of every citizen of this country to live in peace under the percepts of Islam. The failure of government machinery led to formation of volunteers from our pious mosques to set the correct order. Taliban are not here in Pakistan to cause trouble or cause disorder, most of them are so simple and naive and do not carry any weapons. They have just come to implement Islam and protect of this Muslim loving nation, why send military and airforce and waste our resources instead all Muslims in Pakistan should unite to implement Sharia laws, please explain me whats wrong with that.

  20. abul thoiar says:

This is the gradual (phase II) talibanisation of pakistan. Your politicians have signed a pact with the devil, now the common decent pakistanis suffer the consequences while the leaders will seek exile and escape to saudi or dubai with their cash.

Stop this rot of pakistan now and try to salvage what is left before it become the next afghanistan.

  21. Larry Stout says:

I’ve just read “Empires of the Indus” by Alice Albinia, a recent book selling well in Karachi, I’m told. The intrepidity of the author is quite amazing, but it is her comprehension of Subcontinent history and her trenchant socio-political insights, given in snippets, that are still more impressive to me. As much as I was taken with the book, I’m left wishing that she had written with focus exclusively on the root causes of Pakistan’s contemporary ills: her frankness is what the times demand. Although Ms. Albinia is an outsider, I hope that The Dawn will invite her to provide her stimulating opinions on these pages. She certainly is not burdened with chauvinism, myopia, or doctrine.
