Former federal information minister and human rights campaigner Sherry Rehman has been appointed Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States within 12 hours of Husain Haqqani’s resignation.
Haqqani resigned on Tuesday, days after Pakistani-American businessman, Mansoor Ijaz accused him of being behind a memo that accused the Pakistani military of plotting a coup in May.
In your opinion, will Sherry Rehman’s political portfolio make her a credible Ambassador to the US?
How will her new appointment impact US-Pakistan relations?
Sherry Rehman’s previous resignation from the post as federal information minister in 2009 was reportedly due to differences of opinion with President Zardari on imposing restrictions on the media. Will those differences factor in her responsibilities as Pakistan’s envoy to the US?

I think she is an ok choice. But do we not have any career diplomats who can serve in such an important diplomatic position for Pakistan? The repeated nominations of politicians could destroy the professional diplomatic service which would make political appointments in the future inevitable.
I believe Sherry Rehman is the best choice for this post at this point in time. With US Pakistan relations at their lowest ebb, we need a soft face and a person like Sherry to bridge the gaps which have been created. But she has a tough task ahead of her. With military having its teeth drawn, she has to walk a thin rope. I hope that she will not succumb to the pressure she may face.
Sherry Rehman is a really good choice, she is an independent minded person who it is hopped will take right decisions even if she asked otherwise to do so.
it’s good decision goverment has been appinted of US ambassader Sherry Rehman, she is already good relation of international affairs,
She is a learned lady and her selection seems to be a good selection.
I do agree… She’s really one of the best options.
We do not know and cannot understand the back-end working behind this decision. Giving this post to Ms Rehman, in a time when Pak-US relations are extremely volatile, is not a wise decision.
For some reason it appears we are trying too hard to present a positive image of Pakistan by giving major positions to female leaders irrespective of their experience and portfolio.
Hoping this decision is best for the country. She might bring stability to the relationship afterall.
There are many highly qualified personnels in Pakistan who can be the new ambassador. She is absolutely not a qualified person except being a party member
Is not a wise decision….seriously Zardari government should consider other options, Where is Aitazaz Hasan? he is PPP member,….Pak-US relations is in very critical position, a person who should talk in diplomatic manner in the favor of Pakistan, i don’t think Sherry Rehman is eligible enough for this position…. Not Happy with the decision.
Sherry will be sherry to the Americans. Relations would improve. The knot would be re-tightened. But how she handles the issue which Pakistanis do not see through American goggles, -Taliban, Haqqani network and so forth only time will tell.
Actually, the high ranking officials within the Govt are usually recruited based relationship, not on merit and Sherry has also got this position, because of her affiliation with the PPP. However, she has some qualities to improve the relationship between the US and Pakistan over the removal of Taliban from the tribal areas, but she may not have that much impact at the US, because there are things that are beyond her authority to deal. But, she may be able to improve diplomatic ties with the US and small differences.
