Early elections

Early elections

The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, gave the government a six-day deadline for the implementation of the SC verdict in the NRO case. The court’s order referred to six possible options to proceed with the case in case the government fails to implement its decision on the NRO. The options are listed in the judgment which can be read here.

Supreme Court’s Justice Asif Saeed Khosa reportedly said that the president and the prime minister preferred loyalty to party over loyalty to state.

On the other hand, the government is also embroiled in the memogate scandal case, the on-going gas crisis and a floundering economy.

This has led to calls for early elections by leaders of various political parties, including Fazlur Rehman, Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif.

How should the government react to these calls?

What other options does the government have to stabilise the state?

Should early elections be held to give the people a right to make their choice?

I think its important that people get to choose a new parliament before current government gets its desire of “suicide by police” kind’a situation.
For once, we deserve an election based on a government’s performance rather than some emotionally charged issue.

The best option is if the sitting government can develop a consensus among political forces and go for an early election in later part of the year. This is a time when political forces needs to show how responsible are they. They need to start a dialogue on forming interim governments which can hold fair and transparent election in a manner that its result can be accepted even by the losers. If this present democratic setup manages a peaceful transition to next elected government that will be a great success for the democracy in Pakistan. People confidence on political process and parties will be strength which is historically low due to their own irresponsibility and a planed campaign against them.
At the same time I can say that the question of early election may be not valid in the emerging situation of Pakistan which is changing on daily basis. Again it looks like that political process will be hijacked like in the decade of 1990 and election if held will be maneuvered by non political forces. It will be very unfortunate for people of Pakistan as it is like going back to square one. Pakistan people deserve to make their own decision and are capable to make better choices in their own interests.
Let see if history is going to repeat itself or we are living in a different time.

All I can say is that someone needs to help Gilani control his outbursts. He is firing on all cylinders and convincing everyone that this government was never really honest to anyone – not to the nation, not to its people, not to its supporters and partners, not to institutions – no one.

  4. Islam Habib Khan says:

There is no governance and so there is no Government worth talking about.

The country should be taken out of its misery of the last four years.

For the continuation of democracy the only way out is to hold general elections as soon as possible.

A mid-term Government should be formed which can hold transparent elections.

Current crisis in the state are enough to held ellection earlier than the five year endurance. Memogate, a question of national security is in the air, government’s response to the SC regarding NRO is counted as contempt of court as comented by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhri, energy crisis, soaring prices of everyday consumptions and high ratio of unemployment are causes enough to leave the scene for earlier ellection. Because the government is proved to be disable to honour the public mandate.

  6. Mohammad Akram says:

Government should resign and have interim set up to hold next elections. Country is in a state of unrest and people are suffering and no basics are provided by PPP government Where is Roti, Kapra and Makanth PPP top brass is corrupt as said by the SC People of Pakistan would like to see the back of this government.
